Another Algorithm Change: How Google “Pigeon” Will Impact Your Online Marketing
This is an interesting algorithm change and backs some trending topics in the world of online marketing, such as, “reputation management” and “directory marketing. See below for some highlights of how the Google Pigeon Algorithm is impacting online marketing and see the bottom of the article for more articles on the topic.
Changes To Google My Business Listings
One thing that looks to be changing is how Google displays local map listings. It has been reported that the “7-pack” results are no longer being displayed for certain search terms. Instead Google is showing the local carousel at the top of the search results page.
Increase in Visibility for Other Local Listings
There have been reports that there seems to be more directories showing up in search results. These directories include OpenTable, Urbanspoon and more! There have also been reports that Yelp listings are now showing up properly if you search for a company with the word “Yelp” after the search query.
The above two changes support the need for a strong directory marketing campaign to make sure that your NAP (Name Address Phone Number) are identical on all directories and that you are actively claiming more listings.
More “News” Related Search Results
There have been a couple examples of “news” related search results showing up higher in search results. These include press releases, news stories featuring business and off-site content for a company.
Google Pigeon Algorithm Summary
In summary it is important to remember that if you have an active online marketing campaign or are thinking about starting to do online marketing for your company, you need to make sure that you are staying up to date with these algorithm changes. Another, important thing to note is that one way to stay ahead of the changes, is to make sure that you include Pay-Per-Click Advertising as part of your online marketing toolkit. This will ensure that even if your organic listings and/or map listings dip for a little while as you adjust your campaign that you continue to hold higher rankings in search results. With that said, we see a lot of costly mistakes with Pay-Per-Click Campaigns so we recommend making sure you take time to review your account and make sure you have optimized all of the settings so that your cost-per-click goes down!
